The “Baikal” compex

“Baikal” is now home to plutonium-rich fuel from the decommissioned Soviet BN-350 reactor, stored under high security near the large crane visible in the distance. The “Baikal” site presented interpretive challenges to US intelligence reconnaissance in the late Soviet period; it was thought that scientists might be developing beam weapons at the site. Subsequently it has been revealed that nuclear rocket engines were developed and tested here.
