Well casing in museum

This twisted, painted piece of metal wreckage is part of the debris left after the accidental venting of Borehole 1007 on the Balapan Test Site in 1972. As my scintillation detector illustrates, the metal is quite radioactive. Now this item is displayed in the small museum devoted to the STS in Kurchatov. Motivated by seeing it there, I was determined to find what remains of the borehole itself…
