Control rod HCUs

Control rod drive hydraulic control units (HCUs) on the north side, Level 135 of the Unit 3 reactor building. These units have a cylinder of pressurized nitrogen (the smaller, darker-colored cylinder in each unit) that force a piston in the larger stainless cylinders to displace water in the event of a reactor SCRAM. The water is responsible for insertion of the control rod against reactor vessel pressure and the force of gravity (BWR control rods insert from the bottom of the core).
