LPCS pump

Here’s the LPCS pump we came to the reactor building basement to see. It’s the “A” train pump in Reactor 3. The LPCS system is responsible for flooding the core with massive amounts of water if the core pressure drops significantly, as in a major-break loss-of-coolant accident. The pump is driven by a large electric motor. To my right in this photo is the wall separating this compartment from the torus (suppression pool), where the LPCS pump takes its suction.
