Gamma activity measurements of Tokyo-area soil samples » P1030318c

A weighed sample of sand is poured into the mixing beaker and stirred thoroughly with the stirring rod. The beaker is covered with a watch glass and placed in an oven set for 120 deg. C. As the sample dries out, it is periodically removed from the oven, homogenized with the stirring rod, and returned to the oven. Completely drying the source takes about a day. When dry, it is cooled, stirred again, then carefully transferred back into the 3-oz. container and weighed. No significant activity remains in the beaker according to the Geiger counter.
