To make the secondary standard source in sand, a calibrated CsCl liquid from Spectrum Techniques (25µl / 0.5 µCi nominal activity, ±5%) is diluted in a larger volume of ~0.1N nitric acid and mixed with sand. The equipment to do this is shown. Left to right: ~150 ml nitric acid in beaker with stir rod; CsCl source with syringe; weighed dry sand in 3-oz. container; beaker for mixing the source and sand; pancake Geiger counter.
